A win is a win, but sometimes, they’re just not pretty.

Division II provisional school Arkansas-Fort Smith forced overtime with Georgia Southern Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse on day two of the Legends Classic, and the Eagles were able to outlast the Lions for an 86-77 win.

The Eagles were out-rebounded 17-10 in the first half and turned it over 13 times entering the break down 31-27.

With starting forward Cameron Baskerville out with an injury suffered Friday against Valparaiso, all of GSU’s players needed to pitch in and rebound.

“We needed people to play big today,” said GSU forward Rory Spencer, who scored 16 points and recorded all five of the team’s blocks. “Everybody just played big today, just picked it up in the absence of Baskerville.

The Eagles (2-4) held a 68-65 advantage in the final seconds, but a 3-pointer by Aaron McHenry tied the game with six seconds left.

Antoine Johnson’s attempted game winner was blocked by Dean Neville as the horn sounded.

“Regardless of who they are, they played hard and they played physical,” said Johnson, who scored 11 of his 18 points in overtime.

Johnson also snagged a pair of steals in the extra period.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Eagles.

“They’re young, it’s been a while since we won, and they lost their confidence, said first-year GSU coach Charlton Young. “It didn’t matter who it was, we needed to get out there and have a good tussle and pull it out so we could start believing in ourselves again.”

Willie Powers had a team-leading 19 points and Antionio Hanson added 18 – 12 from 3-point range.

Spencer added 16 points.

The Eagles return to action today at 3:30 p.m. against Troy, who is 2-0 in the Legends Classic.

Troy 80, Valparaiso 64

Troy improved to 2-0 in the Legends Classic and 3-2 on the season with an 80-64 win over Valparaiso in Saturday’s early game at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Antywan Jones (14), Richard Delk (14), Yamene Coleman (12) and Brandon Hazzard (12) all finished in double digits for the Trojans.

Valpo’s Brandon Wood led all scorers with 19, and Cory Johnson and Matt Kenny each added 11 for the Crusaders.

Troy faces Georgia Southern today at 3:30 p.m. while Valparaiso takes on Arkansas-Fort Smith at 1 p.m. If Troy defeats GSU today, it will win the tournament outright.
