In front of 3,189 fans, Charlton Young participated in his first game in Hanner Fieldhouse since 1993 and his first-ever game as a head coach.
Georgia Southern (1-0) scored over 100 points for the first time in nearly three years as the Eagles rolled to a 108-59 win over Reinhardt (1-3).
“It’s just beautiful to be back in Hanner for a game,” Young said. “I looked up in the corner and saw (fo rmer GSU coach Frank) Kerns, and he gave me a thumbs up so that made me feel good.”
The pregame was all about the coach, but after the introductions, it was about the Eagles.
Junior-college transfer Rory Spencer pounded down 16 points with a spectacle of slam dunks and alley oops, and point guard Willie Powers returned from injury with 15 points of his own.
“Being the newcomers here, we really had to just come out and show everybody what we’ve got,” said Spencer about his debut with freshman Cameron Baskerville. “We just had to go out there and play hard. Coach Young instilled it in our head that we had to go out and get that first win.”
Spencer also set a school record with eight steals, breaking the previous record of seven held by seven different players.
Powers and Johntavious Rucker were each in their first game back from injury and combined for 31 points, which the Eagles could have used back then.
“Me and (Rucker) were out all last year,” Powers said, “and we missed it — playing with the guys, playing hard and getting a win.”
Antoine Johnson returned from suspension to score 14 in the win.
Sophomore Ben Drayton came off the bench to play 24 minutes. He went 2 for 5 from behind the arc and scored 12.
It was run after run for GSU.
The Eagles reeled off eight-straight points to start the contest, and extended it to a quick 13-4 lead with an Antonio Hanson 3-pointer and a Rory Spencer two-handed slam from a fast-break give off a steal by Antoine Johnson.
The margin just kept getting wider as Spencer and Powers each reached double digits in the first half and 10 different Eagles helped out on the scoreboard.
Georgia Southern also showed a good sign going 8 of 9 from the charity stripe in the first half and finished at 75-percent.
While the Eagles were trying to reach 100, the RC Eagles were struggling to hit 50. They finally did it when Carrlos Lyles sank the third of three free-throw attempts to cut it to 102-50 with 4:15 to go in the game.
The last three points of the game were on a trey by freshman Alex Coxworth, the first of his career.
NOTES: The last time the Eagles scored over 100 points was Nov. 2, 2006 against UC Davis in a 116-73 win. … The audience featured a who’s who of former GSU legends.
