Ty Wright went 0-for-1 and scored three times, Coppin State walked eight batters, beaned six, allowed seven hits and committed four errors and Georgia Southern’s Vince Smith hit a walk-off, three-run homer in his first at bat as an Eagle as GSU (5-1) run-ruled CSU 12-1 in seven innings at J.I. Clements Stadium.

It was just that kind of game.

“I’ve never played in a game that ended with a walk-off (homer) in a run rule,” said GSU shortstop Brian Pierce, who was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run. “Regardless of who you play, you’ve got to have an approach. When the guys maybe don’t throw quite as hard, the approach has got to be to really relax. You can’t go up there and try to do too much and try to force things.”

Smith, a redshirt freshman in his first pinch-hit appearance at Georgia Southern, drove in pinch hitters Eric Phillips and Roman Grimaldi — who each got on board with a walk — with his career-opening long ball.

“I was just trying not to strike out, that was the big thing” Smith said. “I faced pitching like this in high school, so it kind of helped out there. There was a fastball inside and I was like, ‘I’ve just got to hit the ball, I can’t strike out here.’”

Chris Mederos (2-0) got the start, completing the seven-inning game with eight strikeouts, no walks and one earned run.

He allowed four hits in his second start of the season, and set down CSU (0-2) in order five times.

The Eagles put three across in the bottom of the first on the aid of a hit, an error, a fielder’s choice, a passed ball, two walks and two hit batsmen. They stranded three runners in the inning.

In the second inning, Phillip Porter hit a routine fly to right field and CSU second baseman Jonathan Reynolds charged from his position to make a diving catch to save an error. A flyout to center and a strikeout prevented further damage.

Georgia Southern picked up another run on an RBI triple by Kevin Bowles after Pierce got a two-out bunt single in the bottom of the third to make it 4-0, and three more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Randy Williams, two more hit batsmen and a pair of fielding errors on a pickoff attempt to give GSU a 8-1 lead.

The lone CSU run came in the top of the fifth.

Mederos set down 12-straight Coppin State batters before allowing back-to-back singles to Harry Williams and Elgin Thomas in the top of the fifth inning. A wild pitch sent Williams to third to put runners on the corners.

Josue Martinez struck out, before Williams crossed the plate on an RBI infield single by Kallen Fletcher.

The inning ended when catcher Francisco Rosada grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Thomas, who got the start on the mound for Coppin, left in the sixth inning. He threw five innings, allowed seven runs (six earned), struck out two and walked three.

He was pulled after his sixth hit batter.

Reliever Rob McCullough allowed two more GSU runs on three walks and RBI sac flies by Williams and Pierce, before giving up the game-ending homer in the seventh.

Due to weather, a double header will be played today to conclude the three-game series. First pitch of Game one will be at 11 a.m., and Game Two is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Andy Moye and Colin Snow are scheduled to start today’s games.
