PINEHURST, N.C. – Georgia Southern University senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) lost in match play competition at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, held at the Pinehurst Resort. Lethem lost 3 and 2 to Billy Horschel in the opening round among the final 64 that advanced from the original field of 312.

Lethem - one of three Eagles represented at the prestigious national championship - fell behind by two after the first six holes. The senior shot consecutive pars while Horschel carded back-to-back bogies to tie the match.

However, Lethem bogeyed the par-3 ninth hole to fall behind by one. Both golfers played even over the next three holes but another bogey by Lethem on the par-4 13th hole dropped him two behind. Another bogey on the par-3 15th while Horschel shot par saw Lethem down three holes. Both golfers carded a four on the par-4 16th to close out the match 3 and 2.

Lethem and the Eagles will begin their fall season next month.
