The quarterback position at Georgia Southern just got deeper.

According to a Georgia Tech press release, Jaybo Shaw, the two-year backup QB in Paul Johnson’s triple-option offense will transfer to GSU after the conclusion of the spring semester.

Johnson approved Shaw’s release from the Yellow Jackets Monday morning.

“I have mixed feelings,” Shaw said in a statement released by Georgia Tech. “I am excited to go to Georgia Southern and play for coach (Jeff) Monken, but sad to leave Georgia Tech, my teammates and the fans. I appreciate everything Coach Johnson has done for me.”

Monken was Georgia Tech’s slotbacks coach in 2008 and 2009.

The junior quarterback appeared in seven games for the Yellow Jackets in 2008 including back-to-back wins against Mississippi State and Duke, in which Tech out-scored its opposition by a combined 65-7.

Shaw sat out much of the 2009 season due to a broken collarbone suffered in practice in August, 2009, and appeared in six games during the ACC Championship campaign.

Because Shaw will be transferring from the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision to the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, he will not lose a year of eligibility and will have both his junior and senior years to play for the Eagles.

Football wasn’t the only thing that bought GSU to Shaw’s attention.

“While I will have the opportunity to compete for a starting role, a part of my decision is academic related,” said Shaw in the press release. “I want to get my college degree in education, which is offered at Georgia Southern.”

As Shaw is currently enrolled at Georgia Tech, GSU could not comment on the release.

Three new recruits along with Shaw will report to fall camp at the QB position, but heading into spring practice, the players who will be taking the snaps in the option-oriented offense remains a question mark.

The AJC is saying Jaybo left because he wants a degree in Education so that he can teach and coach football. I find it amusing that Jaybo wasn't initially quoted as that being the reason for the transfer. First, Jaybo could get a Master's in Education. This was a cowardly thing for Coach Monken to allow to happen. Even if it was Jaybo's idea to transfer and I doubt that it was, Monken could have discouraged it. Shame on Monken.
